Choosing A High Fiber Cereal

The thought of eating a high fiber cereal makes some people cringe. In the past many high fiber cereals had no flavor and were often describes as eating chopped up cardboard. In recent years the health industry has done many studies which have shown great benefits to eating whole grains and a high fiber diet.

With these studies at the forefront of the health food industry, other cereal producers have gone to great lengths to join in the production of whole grain, high fiber cereals. This has made the selection of high fiber cereals almost confusing in their quantity but does insure that the consumer can find a cereal which is both tasty and healthy. The highest fiber cereals still have some taste issues but there are many cereals with adequately high fiber that have great taste.

Some High Fiber Cereals

The cereals with the most fiber are typically the all bran type cereals. Cereals such as Fiber One, All Bran, and 100% Bran are some of the highest in fiber. Cereals like Grape Nuts, Raisin Bran, and Kashi are not as high in fiber but certainly make up for the decreased fiber with taste. A person who wants to eat high fiber cereals needs to learn to read the nutrition labels on the cereal boxes to find cereals that they enjoy eating but are also high fiber.

Comparing any cereal to one of the total bran cereals will help identify how much fiber a person is truly getting. It is important for a person to realize that some cereals which look like they might be high in fiber really are not. The only way the consumer can identify these cereals for themselves is to read the nutritional labels.

Making A High Fiber Cereal

If a person can not find a high fiber cereal that they really like there are ways to take any cereal of choice and make it higher in fiber. The way to do this is to make a mix of cereals. Using a plastic cereal container, cereals such as frosted flakes and fruit loops can be mixed with one of the whole grain high fiber cereals. Dried fruit and nuts can also be added to make the mix even healthier.

This is a great way to increase fiber in the diet and still enjoy ones food. Some dried fruits, such as apricots, raisins, and prunes, can be very high in fiber. Nuts also will increase the fiber in the cereal mix. Making a mix of choice items will make the morning meal extremely enjoyable and very healthy.
